A Prescient Warning for 2026

In 1949, George Orwell wrote a book that was meant as a warning. Nineteen Eighty-Four isn’t just a story — it’s a look at what could happen when a government controls everything: the news, the history books, and even what people are allowed to think. The story follows a man named Winston Smith who lives under a brutal dictatorship where cameras watch your every move and speaking your mind can get you killed.
Big Brother is always watching. And Winston Smith is about to do the most dangerous thing a person can do in his world: he’s about to think for himself.
Victory Mansions
This is the world the Party created — and it’s falling apart. Winston Smith drags himself up the stairs of his run-down apartment building while the face of Big Brother, the supreme leader, stares down from a giant screen on the wall. London has been renamed Airstrip One, and it’s a grey, miserable place filled with surveillance cameras and propaganda posters. The clocks strike thirteen because even something as basic as telling time has been changed to fit the government’s rules. Winston already looks like a man who’s been slowly crushed by the world around him — and he hasn’t even started fighting back yet.
The Ministry of Truth
Winston’s job is to lie — and he does it all day, every day. He works at the Ministry of Truth, which is actually in the business of spreading lies. His task is to rewrite old newspaper articles and change historical records so they match whatever the Party is saying today. If someone falls out of favor with the government, Winston erases them from history. He feeds the old, true versions of documents into a slot called the “memory hole,” where they’re destroyed forever. The slogans on the building — “War Is Peace,” “Freedom Is Slavery,” “Ignorance Is Strength” — sound like nonsense, but that’s the point. The Party wants people to accept contradictions without questioning them.
The Diary
Winston does something that could get him killed: he picks up a pen and starts writing in a secret diary. In his world, even having a private thought that goes against the government is a crime — they call it “thoughtcrime.” He hides in the one corner of his apartment where he thinks the camera can’t see him, and he writes “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” over and over. He can’t help it. The words pour out of him like they’ve been locked inside for years. Winston knows that the moment he puts pen to paper, there’s no going back. If anyone finds this diary, he’s a dead man. He writes anyway.
Two Minutes Hate
Every day, the Party makes everyone stop what they’re doing and watch a video of their so-called enemy, a man named Emmanuel Goldstein. And every day, the crowd goes absolutely insane — screaming, throwing things, red-faced with rage. It’s like a organized tantrum. The trick is that the anger is real. People’s lives are miserable, and the Party gives them someone to blame — someone who isn’t the Party. Winston plays along because he has to, but he notices something scary: even knowing it’s all fake, he still feels the hate pulling at him. The scariest part of propaganda isn’t that people pretend to believe it. It’s that eventually, they actually do.
Julia
In a world where the government controls who you’re allowed to love, Julia tells Winston something that counts as an act of rebellion: “I love you.” The two of them meet in a hidden spot in the countryside, far from the cameras and screens. The Party doesn’t want people forming real emotional connections because love makes people loyal to each other instead of to the government. Out here, with birds singing and wildflowers growing, Winston feels something he was told didn’t exist anymore — genuine happiness. But this feeling will eventually be used as a weapon against him.
The Room Above the Shop
Winston and Julia rent a small room above an old man’s antique shop, and for a few weeks, they pretend they have a normal life. The room is cozy and warm, full of old-fashioned things that feel like they belong to a better time. Winston becomes attached to a glass paperweight with a tiny piece of coral inside — it’s beautiful and useless, and in a world where everything must serve the Party, that makes it precious. Julia says they’re safe here, and Winston wants to believe her. But hidden behind a picture on the wall, a camera has been watching them the entire time. The room was never safe. It was a trap.
O’Brien’s Promise
A powerful Party official named O’Brien invites Winston and Julia to his apartment and tells them what Winston has been desperate to hear: there’s a secret resistance movement, and they can join it. O’Brien pours them real wine, gives them a forbidden book, and even turns off the surveillance camera in his home — something Winston didn’t know was possible. Winston is so hungry for hope that he believes every word. He doesn’t realize that O’Brien is not a rebel — he’s the Party’s most effective hunter. The “place where there is no darkness” that O’Brien promises isn’t a metaphor for freedom. It’s a prison cell where the lights never turn off.
The Arrest
The trap snaps shut. Armed officers smash through the door and windows. Winston and Julia are torn apart, beaten, and dragged away. The friendly old shopkeeper, Mr. Charrington, turns out to be an undercover secret police officer who was spying on them the whole time. The glass paperweight — Winston’s little symbol of beauty and hope — smashes on the floor. Everything Winston believed in was a setup. The room, the shopkeeper, the feeling of safety — all of it was fake. The message is clear: nothing is beyond the Party’s reach. Every person you trust might be working for the government, and every moment of happiness might be a lie designed to catch you.
The Ministry of Love
Winston is locked in a bright white cell that never goes dark, inside a building called — with typical Party irony — the Ministry of Love. O’Brien, the man he trusted, is now his torturer. But O’Brien doesn’t just want Winston to say what the Party wants. He wants Winston to truly believe it. He holds up four fingers and demands Winston see five. Not pretend to see five — actually see five. The Party’s goal isn’t just to make people obey. It’s to reach inside their heads and change how they see reality itself. If the government says two plus two equals five, then it equals five. That’s the level of control they’re after.
Room 101
Room 101 is where they take you to face the thing you fear most in the world. For Winston, that’s rats. They strap a cage of starving rats to his face and tell him the cage is about to open — unless he gives them what they want. And what they want is for him to betray Julia. Not just say the words, but mean them with every cell in his body. And he does. He screams for them to do it to her instead. In that moment, the Party wins. They’ve reached into the deepest part of who Winston is — his love for another person — and destroyed it. There’s nothing left within him that the government doesn’t own.
He Loved Big Brother
The story doesn’t end with Winston dying as a hero. It ends with something much worse. He’s sitting in a café, free to go wherever he wants, drinking cheap gin, watching the news on a big screen. A tear rolls down his face — but he’s smiling. He loves Big Brother. And he means it. The Party didn’t just force him to obey — they reached inside his mind and rewired it until he genuinely adores the system that destroyed him. The diary is gone. Julia is a fading memory. His ability to think for himself has been completely erased. Winston Smith has been “fixed.” And that’s the most terrifying ending a story can have: not a hero who dies fighting, but a hero who thanks the people who broke him.
The Warning
Orwell didn’t write 1984 as sci-fi. He was writing a parable of the real things he’d seen happening in the world. The surveillance, the propaganda, the rewriting of history, the twisting of language so that people can’t even find the words to disagree — none of it was made up. He was describing the natural pattern of governments to become corrupt and tyrannical.
He was describing what the United States Constitution was designed to prevent.
