July 19, 2018: Rosenstein Lied to Congress About Strzok-Page Texts

Rep. Matt Gaetz revealed that Rod Rosenstein had lied to Congress about the nature of the Strzok-Page text messages.

On May 9, 2017, Rosenstein had testified that he didn’t know of any texts related to the Russia investigation. But Lisa Page had now confirmed in her own testimony that she and Strzok had indeed exchanged texts about the Russia probe.

This meant Rosenstein had either not bothered to determine what the texts contained before testifying, or he had known and lied about it.

Either way, the Deputy Attorney General had given false testimony to Congress — potentially a felony.

Gaetz called for Rosenstein to be held accountable. He noted that Strzok and McCabe had both lied or misled investigators and faced consequences. Rosenstein should too.

But Rosenstein, as the number two official at DOJ and the supervisor of the Mueller investigation, appeared to be untouchable. Republican leaders showed no appetite for pursuing perjury charges against him.

The revelation was another example of the double standard: lower-level officials like Flynn, Papadopoulos, and others faced prosecution for process crimes and false statements, while senior DOJ and FBI officials who lied faced no consequences.

The system was broken.
